Types of Digital Door Locks

Types of Digital Door Locks
Types of digital door locks
Every business is unique, which means that the type of lock you choose will depend on your business's own needs and each lock's capabilities.
Many locks, regardless of its type, offer multiple keyless ways to unlock the door in the event of a lost key or forgotten code.

Keypad door locks
A keypad door lock model requires a PIN to unlock the door. They are very easy to install and maintain, and you can assign different codes to different users. You can change PIN at any time, allowing you to easily manage access to your building.
Some models have protective mechanisms such as keypads that shut down after an incorrect code has been entered three times. Most newer models have a touch screen, but some have physical buttons. There are also combination keypad locks, which use a PIN in conjunction with another type of lock, such as deadbolts or handles.

Keyless/wireless smart locks
Keyless and wireless smart locks are some of the most popular options. They allow you to connect to your locks over a Wi-Fi connection, so you can control your locks from anywhere in the world via a mobile app or remote. However, unless you purchase your locks as part of a smart home package, they may not come with a dedicated mobile app.
Many smart locks offer Bluetooth capability, which can automatically unlock your doors once you get within a certain distance. You may also be able to use your phone or a key card and tap the sensor to unlock the door.

Key cards/ Smart card locks
Key cards are a way to unlock your Bluetooth or radio frequency identification (RFID)-enabled smart lock. You simply tap the card against the lock sensor to unlock it. Key cards can be programmed to unlock multiple locks, so, for example, your one key card can let you into the front, side and office doors in your building.

Fingerprint/Biometric door locks
Fingerprint/ biometric door locks are a popular and upcoming digital smart door lock option. You can unlock a door by having your fingerprint or (less commonly) your eye scanned. This is a very secure option, since fingerprints are all unique and are very difficult to copy. It's also a convenient option for individuals who don't have to carry a key card with them, which means they always have access.
Fingerprint door locks work by scanning a fingerprint and converting it into a numerical template, which then tells the system to unlock the door. Because this system is so dependent on connectivity, thus look for a model with a backup option like a keypad or mechanical lock so you can still gain entry if your fingerprint cannot be scanned.
Many models have a limit of 100 fingerprints that can be stored, so if your company is larger, a biometric lock may not be the best option for you.

SMART LOCK

smart lock is an electromechanical lock which is designed to perform locking and unlocking operations on a door when it receives such instructions from an authorized device using a wireless protocol and a cryptographic key to execute the authorization process. It also monitors access and sends alerts for the different events it monitors and some other critical events related to the status of the device. Smart locks can be considered part of a smart home.

Most smart locks are installed on mechanical locks (simple types of locks, incl. deadbolts) and they physically upgrade the ordinary lock. Recently, smart locking controllers have also appeared at the market.

Smart locks, like the traditional locks, need two main parts to work: the lock and the key. In the case of these electronic locks, the key is not a physical key but a smartphone or a special key fob configured explicitly for this purpose which wirelessly performs the authentication needed to automatically unlock the door.

Smart locks allow users to grant access to a third party by the means of a virtual key. This key can be sent to the recipient smartphone over standard messaging protocols such as e-mail or SMS. Once this key is received the recipient will be able to unlock the smart lock during the time specified previously by the sender.

Smart locks are able to grant or deny access remotely via a mobile app. Certain smart locks include a built-in WiFi connection that allows for monitoring features such as access notifications or cameras to show the person requesting access. Some smart locks work with a smart doorbell to allow the user to see who and when someone is at a door.

Smart locks may use Bluetooth SMART and SSL to communicate, encrypting communications using 128/256-bit AES.

What to look for in fingerprint door locks?

Now that you know all about fingerprint based door locks, you may be itching to get one and install it at your home or office. There are just a couple of things that you should keep in mind while getting a fingerprint based door locking system installed.

First of all, make sure that it has a keypad or a mechanical key slot. This will make sure that in case the system is unable to recognize your fingerprints for some reasons, say a cut or even a power failure, you have an alternative way to get in.

Make sure that you check the FRR (False Rejection Rate) as well as you don’t want to purchase one with a high FRR. Also, locks made of tough brass or steel are recommended over aluminum since they cannot be broken using a crowbar and back the intelligence of the Fingerprint scanner system with their sturdiness and strength.

Checking what powers the system is also a good idea. There are a whole range of systems available that may draw their power from batteries or that could be connected to your main power supply.

Also take a look at the number of fingerprints that can be stored — or in other words, the number of people that can be granted access at once. This is particularly important when you are using the system to secure the doors at your offices and require a lot of people to be able to go in and out.

Advantages Over Other Biometric Fingerprint systems

Advantages Over Other Biometric Fingerprint systems

There are certainly other biometric systems as well that incorporate many of the advantages associated with Fingerprint locking systems. For example, iris scanning plugs the slight potential for security breaches left by fingerprint based systems. Voice based authentication on the other hand, lets you just speak to open the door without even requiring you to place your finger on it.

However, iris scanners are very expensive as compared to fingerprint door lock systems and many people may find the experience of getting their eyes scanned, uncomfortable. While it appears perfect for high security government installations, fingerprint door lock systems are much more affordable and comfortable when its out homes or offices that are being talked about.

Similarly, despite all its advantages, voice based biometric door opening systems have a very serious flaw. The rate of failure is very high. You may have a hoarse throat or a cold and the door will remain unyielding before you, refusing to recognize your voice.

Disadvantages associated with fingerprint door lock systems

Fingerprint based systems while very useful do however have some disadvantages. And ironically enough, many of them stem from the system’s very virtues. While they are very, very hard to fool, it is not impossible. Scanners that use optical systems to obtain information can sometimes be fooled by an image of the finger. On the other hand, a person can get around capacitor based scanners by using a mold. These situations are avoided by using pulse and heat detectors also called live finger detection.

Another major issue with Fingerprint based door locks is that if someone does manage to create a copy/mold/image of your hand that can open doors, well, you are in deep trouble. Since you can’t really reset fingerprints the way you can with a normal password, it will mean either replacing locks or using a combination of pin and fingerprints.

Also, sometimes the scanner may refuse to recognize your finger in case of scarring or cuts or abrasions. Power cuts, battery discharge are other common issues associated with these door locking systems, which have the potential to leave you stranded outside your workplace or office. They are forestalled by integrating a mechanical system, where you can use a key to unlock the door in case of such a failure.

How Do Fingerprint Door Lock Works?

How Do Fingerprint Door Lock Works?

How do Fingerprint Door Lock Works?

Okay, so let’s get down to how these locks actually work. Basically, fingerprint locks operate by scanning and converting your fingerprint data into a numerical template.

Once you place your finger onto the scanner for the first time the conversion into numerical data takes place, and the fingerprint template is saved. This process is then repeated every time you want to grant someone access. The next time someone places his/her finger on the sensor, it matches the data obtained through the finger with the pre-saved values. If a match is found, access is granted and the door opens. On the other hand, if its someone else trying to get through, access is not allowed and the door remains locked. Simple, no?

Now, matching the algorithm is the most important process here. This is usually achieved by the Minutia matching process. In this, several minutia points are located on your fingers pads, along with their position and direction when you register for the first time. This information is stored in the memory. While matching, the already stored fingerprint template is compared to the received input. If there is a match, a green LED usually signals it and the door is opened. The process is very quick and is completed in a fraction of a second. In case you are wondering, two instances of friction ridge skin impressions together constitute a minutia.

What is Fingerprint Door Lock ?

Let’s start with the definition. Although the name in itself is pretty self-explanatory, a fingerprint door lock may be defined as “a system which grants access to authorized personnel by virtue of recognizing their unique fingerprints.” You have probably looked at your hands countless times and noticed the
ridges and valley pattern. The patterns were an important outcome of the human evolution as they enhanced our ability to grip. However, an unforeseen consequence of this particular step in the evolutionary process was to grant humans a fantastic method of identification.

Human fingerprints are extremely detailed and nearly unique. What is more, they are also very difficult to fake or alter and can endure over an individual’s lifespan. This makes them very suitable as long-term markers of human identity. When the technology which can recognize and differentiate between fingerprints is deployed in securing access to a door way, you get a “Fingerprint Door Lock System”.

However, a question which arises is that why should you not stick to the old lock and key? Or use some other alternative methods instead of going for the relatively expensive fingerprint lock systems. Well, not only are fingerprint door lock systems reliable and non-intrusive, there is also no danger of leaving your fingers at home or at office. Also, the fact that fingerprints are nearly always unique, makes fingerprint door locking system perfect with regards to security. And of course, you can hardly forget your fingerprints or even guess it, as is the case with an alphanumeric password.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Keyless Door Locks

Advantages & Disadvantages of Keyless Door Locks
Keyless door locks have become popular among homeowners in recent years. Although these locks were originally developed for use in cars with remote entry systems, they have been successfully modified for use in homes as well.

There are a number of reasons to consider including a keyless door lock in your home. However, there are also some risks associated with this type of system, so it’s important to consider all pros and cons before you install one in your home.

Advantages of Keyless Door Locks

One of the main advantages of a keyless door lock is not needing to carry a key. You’ll no longer need to worry about losing your key or fidgeting at the door to get it open.

It also means that you won’t need to store a spare key somewhere on your property, as many homeowners currently do. Because most criminals are used to looking around to find a spare key, eliminating the need for one will help make your home safer.

Another advantage of keyless door locks is that you can provide entry to your home for others at your discretion. You will not need to make copies of a key or leave keys for dog walkers, housekeepers, or house guests to get in to your home. Rather, you’ll simply need to tell those people the proper code in order to gain access.

With the system in place, you can also tell exactly when and how people attempted to access your home. This gives you a good idea of how secure your house is.

Disadvantages of Keyless Door Locks

While there are many benefits to including a keyless door lock system in your home, there are also some major drawbacks to consider as well. While keyless door lock systems are generally safe and designed to alert police or other authorities if incorrect codes are entered too many times, it is nonetheless possible that an intruder may be able to gain access to your home through this system by guessing or hacking the code.

Just as you can forget your keys and be locked out of your home, you can also forget the passcode to access your keyless entry system and be locked out. While it is safer to use a completely random code and avoid obvious choices like birth dates or simple, repetitive numbers, this can pose a problem if you have a difficult time remembering things.

One final disadvantage of keyless door locks is that electrically-powered systems may not function properly in the case of a power failure. This can leave your door completely locked throughout the failure, or it may result in the door not locking properly and remaining open. Fortunately, most systems have battery backup systems as a fail-safe.

Key Card Door Lock

KEYCARD LOCK

keycard lock is a
lock operated by a keycard, a flat, rectangular plastic card with identical dimensions to that of a credit card or American and EU driver's license. The card stores a physical or digital pattern that the door mechanism accepts before disengaging the lock.

There are several common types of keycards in use, including the mechanical holecard, barcodemagnetic stripeWiegand wire embedded cards, smart card(embedded with a read/write electronic microchip), and RFID proximity cards.

Keycards are frequently used in hotels as an alternative to mechanical keys.

The first commercial use of key cards was to raise and lower the gate at automated parking lots where users paid a monthly fee.

Overview

Keycard systems operate by physically moving detainers in the locking mechanism with the insertion of the card, by shining LEDs through a pattern of holes in the card and detecting the result, by swiping or inserting a magnetic stripe card, or in the case of RFID cards, merely being brought into close proximity to a sensor. Keycards may also serve as ID cards.

Many electronic access control locks use a Wiegand interface to connect the card swipe mechanism to the rest of the electronic entry system.

Newer keycard systems use radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology such as the TLJ infinity.

Type of Card Reader
Mechanical

Mechanical keycard locks employ detainers which must be arranged in pre-selected positions by the
key before the bolt will move. This was a mechanical type of lock operated by a plastic key card with a pattern of holes. There were 32 positions for possible hole locations, giving approximately 4.3 billion different keys. The key could easily be changed for each new guest by inserting a new key template in the lock that matched the new key.

In the early 1980s, the key card lock was electrified with LEDs that detected the holes.

Wiegand Cards
Since the keycode is permanently set into the card at manufacture by the positions of magnetic wires,
Wiegand cards can't be erased by magnetic fields or reprogrammed as magnetic stripe cards can. Many electronic access control locks use a Wiegand interface to connect the card swipe mechanism to the rest of the electronic entry system.

Magnetic Stripe
Magnetic stripe (sometimes "strip") based keycard locks function by running the magnetic stripe over a sensor that reads the contents of the stripe. The stripe's contents are compared to those either stored locally in the lock or those of a central system. Some centralized systems operate using hardwired connections to central controllers while others use various frequencies of radio waves to communicate with the central controllers. Some have the feature of a mechanical (traditional key) bypass in case of loss of power.

Passive RFID
RFID cards contain a small chip and induction loop which the transmitter on the keycard reader can access. The main advantages with RFID cards is that they do not need to be removed from the wallet or pass holder - as the keycard reader can usually read them from a few inches away.

Access Control
In the case of the hotel room lock, there is no central system, the keycard and the lock function in the same tradition as a standard key and lock. However if the card readers communicate with a
central system, it's the system that unlocks the door, not the card reader alone. This allows for more control over the locks, your card may only work on certain days of the week or time of day. Which locks can be opened by a card can be changed at any time. Logs are often kept of which cards unlocked doors at what times.

Privacy
Computerized authentication systems, such as key cards, raise
privacy concerns, since they enable computer surveillance of each entry. RFID cards and key fobs are becoming increasingly popular due to their ease of use. Many modern households have installed digital locks that make use of key cards, in combination with biometricfingerprint and keypad PIN options. Offices have also slowly installed digital locks that integrate with key cards and biometric technology.

What Absorption Type Minibar is Suitable for Hotel Rooms

Room refrigerator is also named room small refrigerator, semiconductors room refrigerators, absorption room refrigerator, mini refrigerator, hotel fridge, mini refrigerator. Hotel room refrigerator is a small refrigerator dedicated in star hotel room for refrigerating fruits, beverages, drinks and other foods, and can also be used for refrigerating cosmetics. There are two main hotel room refrigerator cooling method: semiconductor electronic refrigeration and absorption refrigeration.+

Hotel rooms generally abandon the compressor type small refrigerator and semiconductor type small refrigerator, and choose the mainstream absorption type small refrigerator. The reason is:+

Absorption refrigerator is composed of diffusion absorption refrigeration movement, cabinet and related accessories, the core part is the refrigeration movement, and the movement is a closed system made by a number of steel by bending, combination welding. A certain percentage of ammonia, helium, and water are poured into the system. The refrigerant is ammonia, water is the absorbent, and helium is the diffusion agent. The movement directly uses the heat as the source to drive the refrigerant circulating, to achieve cooling purposes; the system uses the principle of thermal siphon to make the cooling system continuously work without any mechanical transmission.+

Absorption refrigerator is an environmentally friendly high-tech product, because it not using Freon, protecting the ozone layer, without compressor and any mechanical transmission parts, not produce any noise when running, so absorption minibar is reputed as double green environmentally friendly product by the international environmental organizations. Absorption refrigerators are used by plenty of hotels because of advanced technology and high technology content.+

Absorption refrigerator is a thermal power cooling system (electricity, gas, kerosene, various waste heat, etc.). It uses three operating fluid as the component: Ammonia - water - hydrogen. It can be operated in the absence of any electronic or mechanical energy, completely quiet, environmentally friendly, the system is lifetime maintenance-free, and the service life is 15 years, especially suitable for hotels, villas.+

Absorption refrigerator doesn't have compressor, so there is no inrush current when the motor starts, which will have no impact on the local power grid. While the ordinary compressor refrigerator starts about 30 to 40 times every day, starting current reaches 5 amps each time, which is 40 to 50 times of normal operation. What's worse, the instantaneous current of the common compressor refrigerator when starting will greatly affect other appliances running on the same line. Absorption refrigerator uses heat to drive the refrigerant circulating within a closed system, which has no mechanical operation and wear parts, refrigerant leak probability is very low. Therefore, absorption refrigerators are easy maintenance, and have long service life, which is not comparable by a compressor refrigerator.

Modification of Fire Door

Jan 16, 2018
NFPA 80 includes guidelines concerning field modifications of listed hardware, including frames, builder’s hardware, doors, thresholds etc. The growing field of access control and electronic entry systems has resulted in some fire doors being field modified without proper listing agency approval. Field modifications of fire listed assemblies must either be inspected by a listing agency representative, or the modification must be performed by personnel certified to perform such work.

Annual Inspection of Fire Door

Jan 16, 2018
In the United States, the NFPA requires annual inspections of fire-resistance rated door and frame assemblies.[8] Local Authorities Having Jurisdiction must adopt the new edition for this requirement to take effect. Most jurisdictions in the US will be adopting the IBC (International Building Code) model code, which references the NFPA 80 2007 edition requirement, as their local codes.

NFPA 80 5.2.4.requires the following items shall be verified, at minimum:

  1. No open holes or breaks exist in surfaces of either the door or frame.
  2. Glazing, vision light frames & glazing beads are intact and securely fastened in place, if so equipped.
  3. The door, frame, hinges, hardware, and noncombustible threshold are secured, aligned, and in working order with no visible signs of damage.
  4. No parts are missing or broken.
  5. Door clearances at the door edge of the door frame (Wood Door), on the pull side of the door, do not exceed clearances listed in 4.8.4 (the clearance under the bottom of the door shall be a maximum of 3/4") and 6.3.1 (top & edges 1/8") Metal door (top & edges up to 3/16")
  6. The self-closing device is operational; that is, the active door completely closes when operated from the full open position.
  7. If a coordinator is installed, the inactive leaf closes before the active leaf.
  8. Latching hardware operates and secures the door when it is in the closed position.
  9. Auxiliary hardware items that interfere or prohibit operation are not installed on the door or frame.
  10. No field modifications to the door assembly have been performed that void the label.
  11. Gasketing and edge seals, where required, are inspected to verify their presence and integrity.

According to building and fire codes, annual fire door inspections is the responsibility of the building owner. However, as with other mandatory fire inspections, such as the inspection of fire dampers, the fire door inspections are often omitted and many facilities are out of compliance.[citation needed]

The final say on the acceptance of any inspection requires the approval of the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction).

Installation of Fire Door

Jan 16, 2018
As well as ensuring the door is hung properly and squarely, it is also very important that where a fire door is installed, any gaps left in the opening between the wall and the door frame must be properly filled with fire resisting material. Fire doors are normally installed by a carpenter.

Normal Operation of Fire Door

Jan 16, 2018
Most fire doors are designed to be kept closed at all times. Some doors are designed to stay open under normal circumstances, and close automatically in the event of a fire. Whichever method is used, the door's movement should never be impaired by a doorstop or other obstacle. The intumescent and smoke-seal bounding of fire doors should be routinely checked, as should the action of the door closer and latch.

Some fire doors are held open by an electromagnet, which may be wired to a fire alarm system. If the power fails or the fire alarm is activated, the coil is de-energized, and the door closer closes the door. Wireless, battery operated fire door retainers can also be used to safely and legally hold fire doors open.

Rated fire doors are tested to withstand an ASTM E119 standard time-temperature curve for a specified period.[7] There are 20, 30, 45, 60, and 90-minute-rated fire doors that are certified by an approved laboratory designated as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL, e.g., Underwriters Laboratories). The certification only applies if all parts of the installation are correctly specified and installed. For example, fitting the wrong kind of glazing may severely reduce the door's fire resistance period.

Fire Door Failure

Jan 16, 2018
Fire doors are sometimes rendered unable to provide its listed fire resistance by ignorance of the intended use and associated restrictions and requirements, or by improper use. For example, fire doors are sometimes blocked open, or carpets are run through them, which would allow the fire to travel past the fire barrier in which the door is placed. The door's certification markings are displayed both on the door leaves and the fire door frames, and should not be removed or painted over during the life of the building.

Sometimes fire doors have apparently very large gaps at the foot of them, an inch or two even, allowing air movement, such as in dormitory facilities. This can lead the occupants of a building to question their status as 'real' fire doors. NFPA 80 allows a maximum door undercut of 3/4 inch however fire doors are tested with smaller clearances in accordance with NFPA 252.[5] Corridors have a fire rating of one hour or less, and the fire doors in them are required by code to have a fire rating of 1/2 or 1/3 hour, the intent of which is mainly to restrict smoke travel.
